A silver figure of Minerva, Roman goddess of war and wisdom, centers the Roman numeral-engraved chapter ring, indicating the time by pointing to the hour with an authoritative military staff as the sun rotates below her feet to indicate the minute. A finely moulded ebony and turtleshell casing veneered in a mottled red hue holds the clock’s fusée and chain movement with verge escapement and balance with hogs-bristle regulation. Created by Johannes Buschman the Younger, the eminent Buschman family of clockmakers are lauded for designing some of the finest timepieces to ever be created in the South German town of Augsburg during the late Renaissance and early Modern periods.

The store itself was a study in opulence, with hand-cut Baccarat chandeliers and French Regency-style oak cabinetry designed by Horace Trumbauer and Julian Abele. One of the oldest Fine jewelers in the United States, the company was founded in 1839 by James Emmott Caldwell and supplied wealthy Philadelphians with stylish European jewelry, silver, and objects d'art. from Philadelphia is known for its Art Nouveau and Deco jewels. Accompanied by its original gold embossed, velvet-lined leather case and set upon a hardstone base, this clock is a sumptuous reminder of a bygone era. Diamond-studded silver filigree hands indicate the time with Roman numerals and pristine white enamel frames each panel. Its waves radiate from single focal points, such as the cabochon hardstone actuator. Guilloché enamelling in the most luxurious azure color covers all panels of the case. Caldwell & Co., this exceptional timepiece is comprised of a French clock movement.
